Barely an hour from Glasgow, the Firth of Clyde feels like a different world entirely. Islands rise from sheltered water within sight of the mainland, and the crossing from a working river to open, hill-fringed sea happens almost without noticing.
Arran, Bute and the Cumbraes sit at the heart of it, each reachable within a day’s sailing of the last. Sea lochs including Loch Fyne, Loch Long and Holy Loch reach deep into the Argyll hills beyond, and stately homes, historic castles and quiet island villages line the shore throughout.

Shipbuilding Heritage
The Clyde was once the shipbuilding capital of the world, and the term ‘Clydebuilt’ still carries real weight among sailors everywhere. At the industry’s peak in the early twentieth century, nearly half of all ships launched in Britain were built along these banks. Many of the yards were founded by Robert Napier, often called the father of Clyde shipbuilding. Cruising towards Glasgow along the Upper Clyde, guests pass the same waters that once carried the Cutty Sark and the Queen Mary out to sea.
Deep Waters & the River Clyde
The Firth of Clyde holds some of the deepest coastal waters in the British Isles, reaching almost 200 metres in places. That depth made Holy Loch a natural choice for a Royal Navy submarine base during the Second World War, and later a home for the United States Navy’s Polaris fleet until 1992. At its head lies the River Clyde itself, Scotland’s third longest river, which winds down from the Lowther Hills through Glasgow before opening into the firth.
Iconic Islands & Wildlife
Arran is often called Scotland in miniature, its mountainous north giving way to a gentler, fertile south. At Lochranza, the rocks along the shore are where James Hutton, the father of modern geology, first understood the true age of the earth in 1787. Golden eagles and red deer roam the hills, and seals and otters gather along the coast. The gentler shores of Bute and the Cumbraes offer easy walking and birdwatching for those who prefer a quieter pace ashore.
Rich History
Long before shipbuilding, these waters saw the last major Viking invasion of Scotland turned back at Largs in 1263. The battle eventually led Norway to cede the Hebrides to the Scottish crown. Robert the Bruce’s ruined castle still guards the harbour at Tarbert, and grand houses including Mount Stuart and Ardgowan reveal how the Clyde later became a playground for Glasgow’s merchant families.

Greenock & the Upper Clyde
Firth of Clyde cruises embark and disembark at Greenock, and several sail on up the River Clyde towards Glasgow itself, once the beating heart of Scotland’s shipbuilding industry. The Upper Clyde is rich in art and architecture too, from grand houses such as Finlaystone, home to the MacMillan family, to the work of local architects including Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Depending on the itinerary, this can mean a tour of Holmwood House, afternoon tea at the Willow Tea Rooms, or a visit to Hill House in Rhu, widely considered Mackintosh’s domestic masterpiece. Bute & the Cumbraes
On the Isle of Bute, walking guests have explored Rothesay on foot, taking in the climb up Canada Hill, before a visit to Mount Stuart House, the flamboyant Neo-Gothic mansion built for the 3rd Marquess. Cruising past the scenic Kyles of Bute and Loch Striven, previous guests have also landed on Little Cumbrae for a quieter walk around its pier and picnic grounds.
Arran
Anchored overnight in Brodick Bay, guests can join a tour and tasting at Lagg Distillery, one of the island’s newest whisky makers. Goatfell rises steeply behind the bay, and the drive round the coast to Lochranza takes in some of Arran’s wildest scenery, past its own ruined castle and the site of Hutton’s Unconformity.
Loch Fyne & Argyll
Sailing the sheltered waters of Loch Fyne, guests can take in the woodland paradise of Crarae Gardens and the nineteenth century cells of Inveraray Jail. Private visits are sometimes arranged at houses including Ardkinglas and Strachur House, and walking guests can tackle full days out from Furnace and through Glen Fyne, or a gentler stroll around Crarae Point, much as featured on our Footloose walking cruises.
Holy Loch & Ardgowan
At anchor in Holy Loch, Benmore Botanic Garden is the highlight ashore, its towering, 150 year old redwoods and renowned rhododendron collection framed by a quieter woodland walk through Puck’s Glen. Elsewhere on the Inverclyde coast, previous guests have been welcomed to Ardgowan House, a 76 room Palladian mansion, for a private morning tour or a guided walk around its estate.
