On Lewis, the Callanish Standing Stones and Carloway Broch stand testament to its occupation since prehistoric times, whilst the museum at Lews Castle introduces life in the Outer Hebrides from prehistory to the present day. Six of the famous Lewis Chessmen have returned to the island of their 1831 discovery, on long-term loan from the British Museum, taking their place as centrepiece exhibits.
