Fort Augustus – Embarkation.

The Captain and crew welcome you on board in Fort Augustus where we remain overnight.

Friday 14th October

Fort Augustus - Walks ashore. Cruise Lochs Lochy and Oich. Transit the Caledonian Canal to Banavie.

Fort Augustus on the Caledonian Canal by Loch Ness

We step ashore to explore Fort Augustus, the gateway to Loch Ness, which takes its name from a fort built after the defeat of the 1715 Jacobite uprising. Back on board for lunch we sail to the highest point of the canal, Loch Oich at just over 100 feet above sea level, before transitting the pretty, tree-lined Laggan Avenue. Onwards through Loch Lochy in the heart of the Great Glen where steep, forested hillsides give this scenic area a fjord-like feel to the landscape. At Gairlochy we re-join the man made waterway and cruise to Banavie where we berth overnight.

Saturday 15th October

Scenic West Highland Railway to Glenfinnan. Transit Neptune’s Staircase and cruise Loch Linnhe to Oban.

From Banavie we take the West Highland Railway to Glenfinnan and cross the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct which overlooks Loch Shiel and the Jacobite monument. Considered by many to be the most scenic railway line in the world, we travel through a scenic landscape of mountains, steep-sided lochs, and heather moors. We spend the afternoon relaxing on board Lord of the Highlands as we descend the impressive eight inter-connected locks of Neptune’s Staircase to Corpach, and cruise Loch Linnhe to our overnight berth at Oban

Sunday 16th October

Oban – Walking tour and McCaig’s Folly. Tobermory, Mull – Free time to explore at leisure.

Our morning port of call is Oban, the gateway of the isles. We stretch our legs on a walking tour of the town and visit the impressive McCaig’s Folly for spectacular vistas across the bay to the Atlantic Isles. After lunch we venture ashore in Tobermory to discover the brightly painted houses which line the waterfront; originally built by the British Fisheries Company to house its workers, they were constructed at a cost of £20 each.

Monday 17th October

Craignure, Mull – Visit to Iona. Cruise the Firth of Lorne to Oban.

This morning we sail to Craignure on Mull for the excursion to the Isle of Iona, the last resting place of some 50 Scottish Kings and where St. Columba introduced Christianity to Scotland. After exploring the sacred isle and the restored Benedictine abbey, we sail to Oban, where the farewell reception and gala dinner are held.

Tuesday 18th October

Oban – Disembarkation.

We disembark in Oban after breakfast and are transferred to Glasgow for the onward journey home.
