Guest Speaker Professor Donna Heddle

Donna is Director of the interdisciplinary Institute for Northern Studies and Head of Cultural Heritage at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Her research interests are Scottish and Northern Isles cultural history, small island studies, language and literature, and Old Norse. She has published widely in these areas and is currently leading several national and international research projects involving Northern Studies. Donna was awarded a Personal Chair by UHI in June 2013.

Cruise East Coast and Pentland Firth. Kirkwall, Orkney - Churchill Barriers & Italian Chapel.

Churchill Barriers Orkney

The Churchill Barriers are causeways which link Mainland Orkney with South Ronaldsay, as well as the smaller islands of Lamb Holm and Glimps Holm. Built by Italian prisoners, they also constructed the Italian Chapel out of Nissen Huts in their POW camp.

Saturday 2nd September

South Ronaldsay - Tomb of the Eagles Visitor Centre. Stromness, Orkney - Ness of Brodgar.

Perched above the dramatic South Ronaldsay cliffs, we visit the visitor centre of the ‘Tomb of the Eagles’, a Stone Age tomb dating back 5,000 years. From Stromness, the UNESCO protected Neolithic Heart of Orkney, encompassing the Ness of Brodgar.
