We arrive on the southern coast of the Istrian peninsula and take a walking tour of
Pula.This charming town is known for its many surviving Roman buildings, most famous
of which is the first century Arena, one of the best-preserved amphitheatres in the
world.We also see the triumphal Arch of Sergius, the Temple of Apollo and Roman city
gates. Guests can lunch ashore and enjoy free time in the afternoon.
FRIDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER
Split, Croatia – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We take a guided morning tour of Split and its old town, which comprises the
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace, built between the late third and
early fourth centuries by the Roman emperor Diocletian.The Venetian Republic took
control of Split from 1420 to 1797, adding to the Palace’s architectural mix with
Romanesque churches and Renaissance buildings. Our tour includes the Cathedral of
St Duje (the patron saint of Split), built in the Middle Ages from the remains of the
Roman mausoleum.There is the opportunity for lunch ashore, after which guests can
relax on Bavice Beach.
SATURDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER
Rab, Croatia
In the morning, we explore Rab Town on foot. Founded by the Romans, fortified in the
12th century and sold to Venice in 1409, the town has several interesting landmarks.
These include its four famous belltowers, the 16th century Church of St Justin, its
Romanesque Cathedral and the Museum of Sacral Art, whose collection includes the
12th century crucifix of the Hungarian-Croatian King Koloman. Guests can lunch ashore
and take an afternoon swim on one of the nearby beaches.
SUNDAY 28TH SEPTEMBER
Koper, Slovenia – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We drive to the Postojna Caves, where we board trains for a fascinating tour of
20 kilometres of galleries, tunnels and halls. A huge variety of cave formations, or
speleothems, can be seen as the train travels towards Great Mountain, where guests
dismount for a walking tour.There is an opportunity for lunch ashore, followed by an
afternoon walking tour of Koper.This port town was the capital of Venetian Istria and
has a well-preserved historic centre with a Romanesque cathedral. Guests will have
time to stroll around its many shops and cafes.
MONDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER
Chioggia, Italy – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
In the morning, the ship’s tenders take guests ashore for a walking tour of Chioggia,
a picturesque fishing village at the southern end of the Venetian lagoon. Notable sights
include the Church of San Domenico and the Duomo.We return to ship for lunch
on board as we sail to Venice, disembarking for an evening shore excursion. Guests will
enjoy drinks and music outside the Gran Caffè Quadri on St Mark’s Square, followed
by a private visit to the Basilica. Venice’s Cathedral is a superb example of Byzantine
architecture, opulently designed and nicknamed La Chiesa d’Oro (‘the church of gold’)
because of its lavish gilding.
TUESDAY 30TH SEPTEMBER
Venice, Italy
A full day in Venice, starting with a walking tour which takes in the floating city’s
breathtakingly romantic architecture, including the Doge’s Palace, built between 1309
and 1424, and the Ca d’Oro (‘golden house’), one of the most beautiful palazzi on
the Grand Canal. Guests will enjoy a gondola ride through the waterways and can
lunch ashore. In the afternoon, there is free time to explore, relax and shop.

A symbol of Venetian wealth and power from the 11th
century on, the Cathedral was repeatedly embellished
with columns and friezes that Venetian vessels had
sourced from ancient buildings in the Orient.
