We take a guided morning tour of Split and its old town, which comprises the
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Diocletian’s Palace. Built between the late third and
early fourth centuries by the Roman emperor Diocletian, the fortified palace straddles
a vast area of 38,000 square metres. Our tour will take in the Cathedral of St Duje
(the patron saint of Split), built in the Middle Ages from the remains of the Roman
mausoleum; the Temple of Jupiter flanked by Egyptian sphinxes, the Golden and Silver
Gates, and the ceremonial entrance court of the Peristyle. Guests can lunch ashore
and spend the afternoon exploring at leisure.
FRIDAY 19TH SEPTEMBER
Korcula, Croatia – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
In the morning, we take a scenic drive across this lush, wooded island to the
picturesque 19th century town of Vela Luka on the western coast, continuing inland
to the rural town of Blato, surrounded by vineyards.We visit the Etno Kuca folk
museum to see its ethnological collection and enjoy a tasting of local food and wine.
Returning to Korcula Town, there is the opportunity for lunch ashore, followed by a
guided tour of this mini-Dubrovnik, built in the 15th century, and a Moreska
sword-dancing demonstration.
SATURDAY 20TH SEPTEMBER
Komiza,Vis, Croatia
We start the day on the island of Vis, taking a guided walk of Komiza.This charming
fishing village has 17th and 18th century houses clustered around its port, an
interesting Fishing Museum housed in a 16th century Venetian castle, and a 17th
century monastery and church with carved Baroque altars. After lunch on board,
guests can enjoy a leisurely afternoon, with the chance to swim on one of the
island’s unspoilt beaches.
SUNDAY 21ST SEPTEMBER
Veli Iz, Iz, Croatia – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We enjoy a relaxing day on the island of Iz, starting with a walk around the small
seaside village of Veli Iz. Guests will enjoy a private view of the ethnographic collection
at the Homeland Museum, which traces the history of islanders back to 1266 when
the first Croats arrived. A tasting of local food and drink will be followed by a folkloric
performance by the villagers.
MONDAY 22ND SEPTEMBER
Krk Town, Krk, Croatia – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
Arriving at the largest of the Croatian islands, we drive to medieval town of Vrbnik,
spectacularly located atop a 48-metre-high cliff. Originally a walled village,Vrbnik’s
landmarks include its library, Gothic Chapel of the Rosary and Chapel of St John.
The town is set in a landscape of vineyards, and guests will enjoy a tasting of its
famous Zlahtina wine. After lunch, we spend a relaxing afternoon in Baska, a lively
resort town with a superb beach for swimming.
TUESDAY 23RD SEPTEMBER
Rab Town, Rab, Croatia
The morning sees us take a guided tour of Rab Town, founded by the Romans, fortified
in the 12th century and sold to Venice in 1409. On our tour we will see the town’s
four famous belltowers, lavish Romanesque Cathedral and the 16th century Church
of St Justin – originally a Benedictine monastery for young women.We also visit the
Museum of Sacral Art, whose collection of religious art and artefacts includes the 12th
century crucifix of the Hungarian-Croatian King Koloman. Guests can lunch ashore and
enjoy an afternoon of leisure.

The Croats first arrived on the island of Iz in 1266,
and the Homeland Museum’s ethnographic collection
assembles fascinating artefacts from local life through
the ages.

Called Insula Aurea (‘golden island’) for its abundant
natural produce, Krk’s fertile interior is cultivated with
vineyards and olive groves. It is famous for its dry white
wine,Vrbnicka Zlahtina.
