We take a morning tour of Ephesus, at the apex of its powers in AD100 when it was
the largest city in Roman Asia with half a million inhabitants. Key landmarks include the
theatre which held 25,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial combats, and the
Library of Celsus, its façade reconstructed from original pieces.We continue to the
Camlik Locomotive Museum, set in 160 acres of beautiful landscape. Guests can lunch
ashore before an afternoon tour of the port city of Kusadasi and free time.
THURSDAY 24TH JULY
Chios, Greece
We arrive on the island of Chios and drive to the 11th century Monastery of Nea
Moni.This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a beautifully preserved example of
Byzantine architecture, built on a cross-in-square plan.We continue to the unique ‘cave
village’ of Avgonima, its stone houses tucked into a hillside. Returning to Chios Town,
guests can lunch ashore and spend the afternoon at leisure.
FRIDAY 25TH JULY
Dikili,Turkey
In the morning, we drive to Bergama, site of the ancient Greek city of Pergamon.
Dating from the third century BC, Pergamon was one of the capitals of the Hellenistic
civilisation and filled with architectural splendours. Our tour takes in the Acropolis and
its key sights, including the base of the Great Altar of Pergamon (its upper section is in
the Pergamon Museum in Berlin); the theatre, which seated 10,000, and the Library,
which contained 200,000 volumes and was given by Mark Anthony to Cleopatra as a
wedding gift.We also visit the Sanctuary of Asclepius, where health-seeking visitors
bathed in the waters of the sacred spring.We return to ship for lunch on board,
followed by free time in Dikili.
SATURDAY 26TH JULY
Myrina, Lemnos, Greece – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
The morning sees us visit the Portianos Military Cemetery at East Mudros, the location
of 347 Commonwealth graves. Lemnos played an important role in the campaigns
against Turkey in World War I, and was occupied by marine forces in February 1915 in
preparation for the military attack on Gallipoli. We then take a tour of Myrina, the
picturesque capital of Lemnos. After lunch on board, guests can enjoy free time and a
swim from a nearby beach.
SUNDAY 27TH JULY
Canakkale,Turkey
We have a full day and lunch ashore as we tour Gallipoli and its World War I
battlefields. It is here, between April and December 1915, that the Allies fought the
Turks in an effort to capture the Dardanelles, resulting in 140,000 Allied and 250,000
Turkish casualties. Our tour will include strategic sites of action such as V Beach; some
of the 31 Commonwealth cemeteries; and the memorials to the missing, which record
the names of 27,000 British and Commonwealth troops with no known grave.
MONDAY 28TH JULY

We start our day in Istanbul with a visit to the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. Known as the
Blue Mosque because of the blue Izmik tiles of its interior, it was built between 1609
and 1616 and is one of the city’s most imposing landmarks. Guests then enjoy a private
visit to the spectacular church of Hagia Sophia, returning for lunch on board.We depart
late afternoon for our private view and evening cocktail reception at the Archaeology
Museum of Istanbul.

EPHESUS
Only one column remains of the once-vast Temple of
Artemis at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the
World. Built in 550BC, the ‘great marble temple’ was
decorated with bronze statues sculpted by the most
famous artists of the time.
SATURDAY 26TH JULY
MYRINA
Built around its harbour, the pretty town of Myrina is
overlooked by an imposing Venetian castle. Its narrow
lanes are flanked by old mariners’ houses adorned with
wooden balconies, and it is renowned for its long,
sandy beaches.
MONDAY 28TH JULY
HAGIA SOPHIA
This vast, architecturally ambitious church was built by
Emperor Justinian in AD537 and is one of the finest
examples of Byzantine architecture in the world.
