Genoa, Italy
We arrive in the Ligurian capital of Genoa for a walking tour of its old town. In its
maritime heyday, this port city rivalled Venice. Our walk will take in the 16th and
17th century Strade Nuove district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising the
four Rolli Palaces that housed Genoa’s aristocracy. Guests can lunch ashore before
we continue to Portofino.This tiny harbour town is one of the most beautiful on
the Italian Riviera, with sheer cliffs and coves, a glittering marina and pretty squares.
THURSDAY 5TH JUNE
Livorno, Italy – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We take a morning drive to Marlia for a tour of the Villa Reale and its spectacular
gardens.The villa, records of which date back to 1517, was owned by a series of noble
Tuscan families and was home to Princess Elisa Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister, in the
early 19th century. The 17th century garden features grand avenues, a lake and a
theatre formed from yew hedges.We then head to Lucca for lunch. Guests will have
free time to potter around this medieval city and its pretty piazzas and churches.
FRIDAY 6TH JUNE
Menton, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
The morning sees us visit La Serre de la Madone, one of Menton’s world-famous
gardens. Built between 1924 and 1958 by Lawrence Johnston, this beautifully
landscaped garden, structured in terraces around a double pool, became a showcase
for Johnston’s collection of rare, subtropical plants gathered from around the world.
Guests can lunch ashore and spend the afternoon in Menton, one of the prettiest
towns of the French Riviera. Its old town is a delightful mixture of narrow lanes,
medieval buildings and terrace cafes.
SATURDAY 7TH JUNE
Hyères, France
Arriving in Hyères, we drive to Le Parc Sainte-Claire.This glorious garden was created
by Edith Wharton, who wintered here between 1919 and her death in 1937.The vast
gardens are planted with rare South American and Australian subtropical species, and
there are splendid views out to sea. Guests can lunch ashore and spend the afternoon
in medieval Hyères, relaxing in the central Place Massillon or wandering around the old
town’s maze of tiny streets.
SUNDAY 8TH JUNE
Cassis, France
In the morning, we take the coastal road west of Cassis for a scenic tour, reaching the
fishing village of L’Estaque, a popular seaside resort in the mid-19th century and a
haven for Impressionist artists. Cézanne stayed here repeatedly and the village and its
bay were a frequent subject in his paintings.We continue to the lakeside town of
Martigues, known as ‘the Venice of Provence’ because of its many canals, islands and
bridges. Its colourful fishermen’s houses inspired artists including Raoul Dufy.We return
to Cassis, where there is an opportunity for lunch ashore and free time to explore
this seaside village.
MONDAY 9TH JUNE
Villefranche, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We drive to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to visit the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and its seven
themed gardens. Built between 1905 and 1912 by Baroness Béatrice de Rothschild, the
pink villa sits on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Guests can lunch
ashore and enjoy an afternoon in Villefranche, exploring key sights such as its two
14th century churches, or just relaxing by the waterfront.

The extraordinary ‘garden theatre’ comprises a semi-circle
of yew hedges surrounding stone seats, with windows
cut out of the hedge and a stage with terracotta statues
of characters from the Commedia dell’Arte.

LA SERRE DE LA MADONE
Lawrence Johnston is best known as the creator of
Hidcote Manor Garden in the Cotswolds, but this
master landscape designer was also an avid plantsman.
This botanical tour de force contains some 1,500
rare species.

VILLA EPHRUSSI DE ROTHSCHILD
This palazzo on the French Riviera has an enviable
position overlooking the Mediterranean, where French,
Spanish, rose and exotic gardens flourish in a temperate
climate. Musical fountains add a touch of whimsy to the
perfection created by Béatrice Ephrussi de Rothschild.
