Our morning tour of Aix en Provence starts in the Cours Mirabeau, Aix’s central
avenue lined with plane trees and terrace cafes, the most famous of which is the
Deux Garçons, frequented by Cézanne, Zola and Hemingway.The town has 200
mansions (maisons particuliers) dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, majestic public
squares and many fountains. Of note is the ornate town hall, the Mazarin district and
the thermal springs that drew the Romans to Aix in 122BC and gave it the name
Aquae Sextius.The afternoon sees us in Marseille, a city rich in art and history.The
Old Port, guarded by the two forts of St Nicholas and St Jean, is a delightful place to
wander, and notable landmarks include the Abbey of Saint-Victor with its fifth century
crypt and catacombs, and the Cathedral of Sainte-Marie-Majeure.
THURSDAY 22ND MAY
Hyères, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
Arriving in Hyères, we drive to Le Parc Sainte-Claire, the former home and gardens
of the American author Edith Wharton.The vast gardens are planted with rare South
American and Australian subtropical species, and there are splendid views out to sea.
Guests can lunch ashore and spend the afternoon in the medieval town of Hyères, the
oldest resort on the French Riviera. Its 14th century city walls, 13th century Towers of
the Templars and maze of tiny streets make for a perfect lazy wander.
FRIDAY 23RD MAY
Menton, France
We spend the day in Menton, one of the Riviera’s prettiest towns. In the morning,
we take a tour on foot, visiting the beautifully restored Hôtel de Ville on the
Place Ardoino, and the hilltop old town, which has a cluster of medieval buildings
around St Michel church.There is the chance for lunch ashore, followed by an
afternoon exploring at leisure.
SATURDAY 24TH MAY
Monaco – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We arrive in Monaco for the 66th Monaco Grand Prix, the most thrilling and
glamorous event in the Formula One calendar. On disembarkation in the morning,
guests will be escorted to the Hebridean private apartment, where the qualifying
trials will be watched from the superb vantage point of the balcony. Breakfast, lunch
and refreshments are served throughout the day.
SUNDAY 25TH MAY
Monaco – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
In the morning, we return to our private apartment to watch the exciting Grand Prix
finals.The balcony has excellent views of the Devoté bend, up towards the Casino, and
of the giant screen on the track. Alternatively, guests can relax and watch the action on
our in-room screen. Guest Speaker Murray Walker will be on hand to discuss the
action. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be served throughout the day.
MONDAY 26TH MAY
Villefranche, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We drive to Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat to visit the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild and its
seven themed gardens, adorned with patios, fountains and ponds. Baroness Béatrice
de Rothschild built the pink ‘palazzino’ between 1905 and 1912 on a promontory
overlooking the bay of Villefranche. Guests can lunch ashore and enjoy an afternoon in
the charming seaside town of Villefranche, ambling around its 1557 Citadel and its two
14th century churches, or just relaxing by the waterfront.
