We depart for the beautiful port town of Cadaques in north-eastern Spain for a
guided tour of this historic Catalonian haven for artists and intellectuals.This includes a
visit to the house-turned-museum of the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, a labyrinthine
dwelling topped with giant concrete eggs and filled with the artists’ quirky personal
artefacts.There is free time to explore this pretty port town independently. After lunch
on board, we sail to Port La Nouvelle where guests can stroll after dinner.
WEDNESDAY 14TH MAY
Port la Nouvelle, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We head for a privately escorted tour of Carcassonne.This fortified town is two
cities in one, comprising a medieval lower town and the UNESCO World Heritage
walled city, la Cité, above it.The Cité’s fortifications were progressively enhanced by
the Gauls, Romans,Visigoths, Moors and Franks, and the walled city was a major
Cathar stronghold. Our tour will take in the double ramparts, 52 stone towers and
12th century Château Comtal.After lunch, guests can explore the fairytale spires
of the citadel at leisure.
THURSDAY 15TH MAY
Sète, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
We take a walking tour of Sète, a portside fishing town and the birthplace of the poet
Paul Valéry. Guests can freely explore this delightful town and take lunch ashore before
we depart for a guided tour of the Cistercian Abbey of Valmagne. Dating back to 1139,
this Gothic abbey was once home to 300 monks. After the French Revolution it was
transformed into a wine cellar. It has three gardens, including an elaborate cloister
garden within the abbey walls.
FRIDAY 16TH MAY
Toulon, France – See Privately Escorted Tour Highlights
A walking tour of Hyères, the oldest resort on the French Riviera, includes its 14th
century city walls, 13th century Towers of the Templars, St Paul’s English Church and
Le Parc Sainte Claire, a vast, beautiful garden that snakes around the last home of
American author Edith Wharton.There is free time in Hyères in the afternoon.
SATURDAY 17TH MAY
Toulon, France
After a morning at sea, we dock at Cannes. Guests have the opportunity to lunch
ashore at one of Cannes’ famed seafood restaurants. In the afternoon we drive to the
magnificent hilltop Château de Gourdon, a Saracen fortress that became a primary
lookout for the French during the 12th century. Guests will have ample time to see all
that this grand, gardened castle has to offer.
SUNDAY 18TH MAY
Cannes, France
After a morning at sea we arrive at the glamorous French harbour town of St Tropez.
Guests have the opportunity to lunch ashore, after which we depart for Château
St Roseline near the picturesque village of Les Arcs.The 12th century Château is both
a winery and an historic abbey that holds a collection of religious art. Guests can
explore at leisure before returning to the ship.
MONDAY 19TH MAY
Marseilles, France
We head inland to Arles for a tour of its Roman remains, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.The amazingly preserved site includes an amphitheatre, necropolis and baths. After
lunch ashore, we return to the ship in Marseilles.

Marseilles, France
Guests disembark in Marseilles.

CARCASSONNE
This treasured city fell into such disrepair that it was
almost destroyed in 1849 after an official decree to
demolish it. A campaign by the city mayor and the writer
Prosper Mérimée helped save the town and the
architect Eugene Viollet-de-Duc was commissioned to
restore it.
THURSDAY 15TH MAY
ABBEY OF VALMAGNE
The Cistercian monks planted vineyards around the
abbey during the 12th century, which today produce
Coteaux de Languedoc wines.
FRIDAY 16TH MAY
HYÈRES
In 1883, Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure
Island, moved to Hyères and lived for two years in a
chalet called Solitude. He later wrote, “I was only happy
once; that was at Hyères.”
