Explore South Africa’s historic battlefields from two carefully chosen lodges in KwaZulu-Natal. Aficionados of military history will find ample food for thought in the Zulu and Boer battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal.
South Africa Historic Battlefields
Stay at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge and you will be in the best possible place to learn about the Anglo-Zulu War and visit its key battlefields. The lodge was created by one of the leading authorities on the subject: the Rattray family, who pioneered heritage tourism in South Africa.
Guests will visit the site of the Battle of Isandlwana, where invading British forces were defeated by the Zulu army on 22nd January 1879, resulting in the greatest British military defeat at the hands of native forces in history. Also in this programme is a visit to Rorke’s Drift, where the British had a reversal of fortune just after the disaster of Isandlwana, successfully defending their garrison against a mighty assault by over 4,000 Zulu warriors.
Alternatively, stay at Three Trees Lodge at Spioenkop, the sister property of Fugitives’ Drift, and discover the inside story on the Second Boer War of 1899-1902. Tours revisit the Battle of Spioenkop, site of the most famous and ferocious battle of the war, at which Louis Botha (the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa), Winston Churchill and Mohandas (the future Mahatma) Ghandi were all in attendance.
Guests will also visit the site of the battle of Colenso where Churchill was captured, and Ladysmith, where the Burgher Memorial commemorates the 781 Boers who lost their lives in Natal.
