Visit a fitting memorial to Edwardian extravagance and modernity at Kinloch Castle on Rum, built as a hunting retreat for the wealthy Lancashire textile heir, Sir George Bullough.

A world away, clamber along rocky Loch Coruisk, where volcanic lava spewed from its epicentre 60 million years ago and cooled into the massive gabbro Black Cuillin above, so powerfully painted by Turner. The chocolate-box charm of Plockton is irresistible on walks past palm trees and flower-filled gardens, reflecting idyllically on the glassy waters of Loch Carron.

Across the Inner Sound to Skye and to Portree, steeped in poignant Jacobite and Clearance associations, explore the dramatic land-slips of the Trotternish Peninsula on an awe-inspiring tour. Saunter in the haunting beauty of Loch Torridon at picturesque Shieldaig, backed by silver-crested peaks, in another living painting. From the Tiree Lounge, watch dramatic landscapes unfold as Hebridean Princess glides through the Inner Sound, beneath the Skye Bridge and into Kyle of Lochalsh en route for Eigg.

Walk on this unspoilt wildlife haven below the impressive lava mass of An Sgurr, or enjoy a more leisurely stroll by the landing stage. On wild, rugged Ardnamurchan, the westernmost point on mainland Britain, Salen is always an oasis of peace on walks by the leafy banks of Loch Sunart, a far cry from the bustling waterfront of Tobermory, Georgian capital of Mull.

From Craignure, travel back centuries at ancient Duart Castle, ancestral home of the Clan MacLean, taking a final glimpse of the Hebrides on green Lismore, the quintessential Inner Isle.
