Discover wild Jura, 'Island of the Deer', so named after the thousands of red deer that roam its rugged moors, a world away from it all.
Onwards to fertile Gigha, view the colourful exotic plants and woods at Achamore House Gardens, a remarkable epitaph to their creator, Sir James Horlick. Overlooking Loch Melfort, woodland Arduaine is an outstanding garden, ablaze with vibrant rhododendrons and other bright spring flowers. Contrast the softer setting of the idyllic garden at Colonsay House, designed in the 1930s to complement the natural landscape.
Linger at Ardchattan Priory Garden, originally planted by medieval monks, with breathtaking views over Loch Etive to Mull and Ben Cruachan. Northwards to Seil, relax at romantic An Cala, planted in the 1930s on a rugged horse-shoe bay, superbly reflecting the mood of its times. Cruising to Skye, relive MacDonald clan history at Armadale Castle, where the 40 acre gardens attractively complement the Gothic mansion ruins, sheltered by 200 year old trees.
Admire the life's work of Osgood MacKenzie at Inverewe Gardens, which he planted as a young man in the 1860s on a high bluff of Torridon. Compare the feel of Attadale Gardens, skilfully restored by their owner Nicky Macpherson as an artist's garden after the 1980 storm, looking to Skye and the west coast. On our last day, enjoy a special visit to remote Canna House Walled Garden, where fruit, flower beds and ornamental lawns now thrive on a once derelict two acre site, before walking on tranquil Muck, our final port of call.
