Step on board Hebridean’s Royal Crown in the northern Rhineland town of Cologne and settle in to life on board before we set sail the next morning on our serene cruise through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Rhine Valley.
Our first port of call in Mainz allows us to take a guided walking tour of the city to discover the beautifully restored half timbered houses and Baroque churches. The following morning our cruise takes us to Mannheim where we visit the Schwetzingen Palace. Originally built as a knightly water palace it was transformed in the 18th century by the Prince Electors of the Rhineland-Palatinate into the “Palatinate Versailles”.
A brief stop at Rastatt affords a visit to Baden Baden, where we embark on a walking tour of the city, before rejoining Hebridean’s Royal Crown in Strasbourg for dinner. We then spend a full day in the city of Strasbourg, home to the European Parliament. In the morning we take a walking tour of the old city, awarded UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1998, and also visit the 13th century cathedral. This will be followed by a guided coach tour of the new city before returning for lunch on board. There will be time to return to the city to explore at your own pace in the afternoon.
Our penultimate call is the city of Speyer. Formally a Roman town, it is home to a six towered cathedral, the largest and most imposing from the High Romanesque period of Germany. A walking tour includes the Jewish baths, the market square and the Town Hall as well as the cathedral.
The final afternoon is spent in Cologne where we visit the imposing cathedral, famously hit by 14 large aerial bombs during raids in World War Two, but still left standing. The city of Cologne is the backdrop to our Farewell Gala Dinner before our return journey home the following morning.
